Linkbuilding using Tumblr

Tumblr is as a cross between Wordpress and Facebook. Tumblr has all the blogging functionality of a blog platform such as Wordpress, but also includes all the features of a social site such as hashtags, following, sharing, and liking. Tumblr is similar to Pinterest in many ways, except instead of multiple boards you have a single blog.

So although Tumblr is one of the most popular blogging platforms on the web, it goes beyond just being a blog and allows users to share and like each other's content, follow other Tumblr blogs, and discover new content through hashtags. It's a blog platform with built-in social functionality and incredible viral potential.

One of the reasons Tumblr has been popular for linkbuilidng is that it created links without de "nofollow" tag. This made it an easy platform for linkbuilding. Recently Tumblr started adding the "nofollow" tags to links in your posts.

Does this make Tumblr less of an opportunity for linkbuilding? Yes and no. Creating links directly for Tumblr posts to your website will not increase your ranking in Google. But Tumblr can be the catalyst for traffic of linkbuilding visitors. Most people who are looking on Tumblr also have a Tumblr account themselfs (and problably Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest accounts). If they find your website/posts on Tumblr and click though to your website, they might link to it or write about it on their blogs.

And all you need to do is create an account and start re-blogging your website posts. If you spend enough time on your Tumblr account it will pay off.

Linkbuilding using social media in general

Most of the social networks will generate useful backlinks. Although links from Twitter and Facebook will give you a short boost on your position in Google, the effect will not last. This does not mean social media is useless for linkbuilding. On the contrary! Most backlinks to popular websites are not generated or requested by the webmasters them selfs, but by enthusiastic visitors. So use social media to activly promote your website. If your website proves to be interesting enough to visitors, the first links on other websites and weblogs should start to appear within a month!
